How to a stop to the leak in your house

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

Before you add a clamp, add a block of wood.

If you're in a hurry and don't have the proper tools, you can improvise by placing a block of wood over the piece of rubber before tightening a clamp. The block of wood will help to spread the pressure and keep the pipe from collapsing.

Obtain a C-Clamp

For a temporary remedy, place a C-clamp over the block of wood and a piece of rubber to plug the leak.

Remove the faulty pipe.

If you're more experienced with plumbing repairs, you might go ahead and cut out the damaged section of the pipe. Turn off the main water supply valve, empty the damaged water line, and cut out a length of pipe that extends about 1 in. on each side of the leak with a pipe cutter. Begin by securely grasping the pipe in the cutter's jaws and tightening the cutter's screw. As you tighten the screw handle, rotate the cutter in the direction illustrated until the pipe snaps.

How to keep frozen pipes from bursting in your home

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

Winter storms can cause plumbing lines to freeze and perhaps burst, resulting in flooding and costly water damage to your home. Preventing frozen pipes and other cold-weather risks can be reduced or eliminated by taking preventive actions before winter arrives. "Because of their location in the residence, some pipes are more prone to freezing than others."

The following pipes are particularly vulnerable to freezing:

Pipes that are exposed in unheated portions of the house.
Pipes that are positioned on the outside of the walls.
Any plumbing on the home's outside.

Why do frozen pipes often burst

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

The easiest method to deal with frozen pipes is to prevent them from occurring in the first place.

But, if the unexpected happens, you'll need to act quickly to limit the damage and restoration costs.

Why do frozen pipes burst?

According to Roto-Rooter spokesman Paul Abrams, not all frozen pipes explode. However, when one does, it is due to the fact that water expands as it freezes, putting significant pressure on inflexible plumbing pipes. That pressure can induce a small breach at a joint or crack in a length of pipe, allowing full flow of water into your home.

Water damage caused by burst pipes is one of the most common homeowners insurance claims, with an average claim cost of around $5,000.

How to Spot Freezing Pipes

A frost-coated water line (or one that bulges like a well-fed python) is a solid indication that it's frozen, although not all plumbing pipes are visible.

"If your faucets aren't working and your toilets aren't refilling after a flush, it's a good

sign your pipes are frozen,"

How to Clean Up Blood in a Variety of Situations

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

The most prevalent location for blood spills is on a hard, non-carpeted surface. Tile, ceramic, vinyl, linoleum, metal, wood, cement, and any other non-absorbent flooring, such as a pool deck, are examples of these surfaces. Cleaning up blood and other bodily fluids from various surface types is easier than cleaning up on absorbent surfaces, but there are still vital precautions to take.

Spills on hard surfaces can spread over larger regions, so the spill must be contained fast. The following are the processes for cleaning up spills on these surfaces:

Close off the area until the cleanup and disinfection are finished. The location should not be accessible to tourists or unprotected staff members.
Don a pair of disposable gloves.
Wipe up as much of the spill as you can using a paper towel or other absorbent material.
Pour a bleach solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water) gently over all affected areas.
Allow the bleach solution to remain on the contaminated area for 20 minutes before wiping up any residual bleach solution.
All non-disposable cleaning materials, such as mops, brushes, and rags, must be disinfected by soaking them in a bleach solution and allowing them to air dry.
Remove the gloves and store them in a rubbish bag with the rest of the soiled cleaning supplies.
Garbage bags should be double-bagged and tightly tied before being discarded.

What Is the Best Way to Clean Up Flood Water?

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

You can start cleaning after you've recorded the damage and filed your claim. Depending on the extent and source of the flooding, you may be able to handle the cleanup on your own or you may need to contact a professional.

Open windows: Unless it will result in more flooding, open as many windows as possible to encourage air circulation.
Remove standing water as soon as possible with a shop vacuum or water pump. Prolonged contact with water can cause additional damage, such as swelling of timber floorboards, so attempt to remove standing water as soon as possible with a shop vacuum or water pump.
Cleanse carpet: Use a carpet cleaner to thoroughly scrub salvageable rugs and carpet, then quickly dry them. If the flood water is tainted with sewage, however, throw away all carpets.

Clean upholstered furniture: Hire a professional to clean your upholstered furniture, and dispose of any damp mattresses.
Remove floorboards: If you have hardwood floors, remove a floorboard every few feet to prevent swelling from buckling the floor. Your adjuster will inform you whether any further floors, tile, or vinyl must be removed to allow the subfloor to dry. Allow wooden floors to dry gradually to avoid cracking.
After you've washed any hard surfaces, sanitize them with diluted chlorine bleach.

What Should You Do If There's a Flood?

If your home or apartment has been flooded, the first step is to ensure that there are no new safety hazards.

To prevent further damage, turn off the water line if it is the source of the flooding.
To avoid electrocution, disconnect all electrical equipment and turn off any electrical fuses, even if the power is already off.
Notify your utility providers if you suspect any damage to your gas, water, electricity, or sewage lines, since these would necessitate professional assistance.
Examine your home for structural damage caused by floods, such as a warped floor or a sagging ceiling.

What steps should you take if your home floods?

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

Put a stop to the flow of water at the source.

Unless the flooding is the result of a natural calamity, identify the source of the water and shut it down or lock it up. The simplest way to stop water flow is to turn off the main water valve to the house. Locate the valve before it floods if feasible so that you can find it quickly in the case of a water emergency.

Turn off the power.

After the source of the water has been turned off, switch off any electrical systems in your home—but don't walk through water to get to the fuse box. If you can't reach the fuse box without stepping in water, call an electrician.

Evacuate the structure.

If a pipe has broken or a sewage leak has occurred, evacuate the premises and seek a dry, safe spot outside your home. It could be in your own backyard or as far away as a neighbor's or friend's house. Check to check that everyone is safe and undamaged, including children, dogs, and anyone else who may have been at the house.

In the event of a natural disaster, consult authorities or listen to local news to find a temporary shelter. Evacuate everyone to the shelter as soon as possible.

What you should do if your house floods

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

A flood is one of the most damaging and devastating things you may ever endure as a homeowner. Household flooding can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

Heavy downpours
Back-up sewer system
The sump-pump isn't working.
Pipes burst
Whatever the cause, you should still know what to do if your house floods. Taking care of the problem as soon as possible will help decrease the amount of damage and make clean-up and repair easier.

First and foremost, safety.

The most important thing to do in any severe house tragedy is to stay safe. If the flooding is severe enough, you may be forced to abandon your home. When you come home to begin dealing with the consequences, make sure you are also protected. Turning off the power may be necessary, as water and electrical do not mix. When you return home, use protective clothing, such as rubber boots and gloves. Not only will you have to deal with the water, but also with whatever else the water has come into contact with, such as debris or even sewage. It is vital to safeguard oneself from any potentially toxic chemicals or materials that may have been washed in by the floodwaters.

Inquiring to the Insurance Company

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

Your homeowners' insurance will vary depending on your policy, but many insurance companies cover floods caused by storms, backed-up city sewers and storm drains, faulty sump pumps, or burst pipes. The insurance company will dispatch an adjuster to inspect and assess the damage to decide whether or not it is a covered loss. If your losses and damages are covered by insurance, the sooner you contact the provider, the sooner they will pay out. Repairs can be pricey, but the insurance money will help you get your home back in order faster and with less financial stress.

If your flooding is part of a bigger weather disaster, your insurance carrier may be unable to send an adjuster soon away. Take as many photos as you can before, during, and after cleaning to document the values of everything. This will assist the adjuster when he or she arrives to inspect the damage.

Cleaning up after a ruptured pipe

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

A burst pipe can be caused by anything from a blown-out sink valve to a water main fracture and everything in between. Turning off the water supply and stopping the flow of water is the most important component of dealing with a burst pipe. The water is fairly well confined if the pipe is in a crawl space or basement. However, if the burst pipe is in a domestic setting, such as a toilet feed or an under-sink supply line, drying out the area gets more complicated depending on how much water has inundated the house.

Open windows in the house to allow damp air to escape. Several fans strategically placed around the area will assist circulate the air and push moisture out the windows.

Using a wet/dry vacuum, remove any pools or puddles of water. The more water you remove with this procedure, the less water there will be to disperse naturally. Mop up the water and flush it down the drain in difficult-to-reach areas.

Mold avoidance

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

Mold avoidance

Eliminate moisture in your home to make it unfriendly to mold growth. Here are some mold protection DOs and DON'Ts.

DO utilize air conditioners or dehumidifiers to keep the humidity in your home between 30% and 60%.
Install exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom.
DO use bleach and other mold-killing solutions to clean your restrooms.
BEFORE APPLYING WALL AND CEILING PAINTS, ADD MOLD INHIBITORS.
DO check hoses, pipelines, and fittings to ensure that any leaks do not create moisture. To be safe, replace hoses to large appliances such as washers and dishwashers every five years: a common water hose costs as little as $10.

DO keep your roof in good condition to keep water from entering your home.
DON'T LET LEAVES AND OTHER DEBRIS clog your gutters; clean them on a regular basis.
DON'T USE CARPETS IN WET AREAS LIKE BATHROOMS OR BASEMENTS.
DO NOT ALLOW WATER TO COLLECT UNDER HOUSEPLANTS.

Sewer backup causes

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

Sewer backup causes

While sewage backups are not the cause of most basement water problems, the Civil Engineering Research Foundation states that the number of backed up sewers is increasing at an alarming pace of roughly 3% each year. Sewer backups can be caused by a variety of factors; here are some of the most prevalent.

Sewerage systems that are getting old? According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, the nation's 500,000-plus miles of sewer pipes are on average more than thirty years old. The increased number of residences connected to aged sewage systems has also contributed to an increase in sanitary sewer backups, flooded basements, and overflows.

Pipelines that connect? Problems develop when storm water and raw sewage are combined in the same pipeline. During many rainstorms, the systems are subjected to greater volume than they can handle, resulting in a sewage backup situation in which sewage spills into basements and other low-lying drains.

What to Do if a Pipe Bursts

3/3/2021 (Permalink)

If you walk in to discover Old Faithful in your basement the first thing you should do is shut off the main water supply to minimize flooding. Next, call your plumber.

Immediately dry out by removing as much water as possible using mops, sponges, towels, and a wet/dry vacuum. To minimize mold, mildew, and other moisture-related problems, run a dehumidifier in the space until it's very dry.

For big messes, call your insurance agent. The good news is that most homeowners insurance covers burst pipes and the resulting water damage.

Under-Insulated Walls

3/3/2021 (Permalink)

If pipes traveling in exterior walls have frozen in the past (tell-tale signs include water damage, mold, and moisture build-up), it’s probably because of inadequate or improperly installed insulation. It might well be worth the couple hundred dollars it costs to open up the wall and beef up the insulation.

"When nothing else works, say for a northern wall in a really cold climate, the last resort is to reroute a pipe," notes Abrams. Depending on how far the pipe needs to be moved — and how much damage is caused in the process — this preventative measure costs anywhere from $700 on up. Of course, putting the room back together is extra.

Heading South for the Winter?

3/3/2021 (Permalink)

For folks leaving their houses for an extended period of time in winter, additional preventative measures must be taken to adequately protect the home from frozen pipes.

  • Make sure the furnace is set no lower than 55 degrees.
  • Shut off the main water supply and drain the system by opening all faucets and flushing the toilets.

In extreme situations (vacation home in a bitterly cold climate), Abrams recommends having a plumber come to inspect the system, drain the hot water heater, and perhaps replace the water in traps and drains with nontoxic antifreeze.

Turn up the heat

3/2/2021 (Permalink)

Set up fans to blow heat into cold rooms. Keep the garage door closed. If you have reduced water flow, heat the most vulnerable pipes (usually in basements and crawl spaces or near exterior walls) with a hair dryer. Leave the faucet on while you apply heat. As you melt ice, the flow will increase. Figure out how to insulate the walls to help keep pipes from freezing.

Open doors

If you have exposed pipes inside closets or pantries, leave doors open. Open vanity or cabinet doors so warm air can reach the pipes under sinks as well. Learn how to insulate a garage to reduce heat loss.

Place a piece of rubber over the leak

Putting a piece of rubber over the leak should be done in conjunction with placing some kind of clamp over the broken pipe. Insulating before winter can help prevent the problem.

Removing smoke odor from the home

3/1/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke can enter and remain in and between the walls of the living space. If it is not properly removed, the smoke odor reoccurs from time to time, particularly during damp periods. Therefore, action should be taken to properly remove all smoke odors.

During a fire, the heat will expand pores in the walls and fill the pores with smoke. After the fire, the house cools, the pores close and trap the smoke odor. On warm days the pores will open and release the trapped smoke odor, which could settle on furnishings. Professional fire restorers can eliminate the smoke odor with a process called thermal fogging, which opens the pores in the walls and neutralizes the smoke odor. There is probably no process a home owner could use that would work as effectively as thermal fogging.

Household vents and ducts trap smoke odors. During a fire, smoke drifts through the ducts and becomes lodged on the sides. Since it may be impossible to clean the ducts; some professional fire restorers will use a chemical sealer to secure smoke permanently to the sides of the ducts. This procedure prevents smoke odors from drifting in the air at a later time.

If the attic has been insulated prior to the fire, it may be necessary to remove the insulation. Insulation cannot be cleaned; unfortunately, it will need to be replaced because insulation retains smoke odors.

How to handle water damage to your business

2/12/2021 (Permalink)

Insurance coverage

Home and business property insurance policies cover some water damage losses, but not all of them.

What they cover: Most policies will cover losses caused by water that enters through holes in roofs, broken or leaky windows, leaky pipes, and faulty dishwashers and washing machines.

What they don't cover: Many will not cover loss caused by the back-up of water from plugged sewers and drains unless the policyholder has purchased extra coverage. They do not cover damage caused by floods, rising tides and rainwater, overflowed rivers, and other natural causes. Insurance available from the National Flood Insurance Program is necessary to cover these losses.

In case of water damage

If you have a water damage loss, contact a restoration company as soon as possible, notify your insurance company, and work with them closely. By taking practical steps, you can prevent unnecessary damage and return to normal quickly.

What is a Water Damage Clause?

2/12/2021 (Permalink)

Awater damage clause is the section of an insurance contract that details whether and how much the insurer will pay the insured for damage caused by water

Why does a water damage clause matter?

The water damage clause is among the most important provisions of an insurance policy. Accordingly, it is important to read your policy and understand the protection you do and don't have when it comes to water damage. You may want to consider purchasing extra coverage if a property is vulnerable to certain types of water damage -- especially flooding.

Water Damage Insurance

2/12/2021 (Permalink)

DEFINITION of Water Damage Insurance

Water damage insurance is a type of protection provided in most homeowners’ insurance policies against sudden and accidental water damage. Water damage insurance does not cover damage resulting from homeowner's negligence or failure to maintain the home in good repair. Moreover, flooding usually requires a separate policy if available.

BREAKING DOWN Water Damage Insurance

As water damage insurance does not cover negligence, many types of water damage to real property can and should be avoided through proper maintenance. This can be anything like watching out for drippage from the ceiling during a rainstorm or a fixing a leaky pipe under the kitchen sink before mold becomes prevalent.

Remove Surface Water & Scrub the Floor

2/11/2021 (Permalink)

Use a shop vacuum on "wet mode" (no bag) to remove as much water as possible from the surface of the flooring. This is easiest with a wide flooring attachment on the vacuum hose. It also helps to use a squeegee to gather the water as you suck it up.

Mix a mild detergent and a compatible disinfectant (such as Mr. Clean) with clean water in a bucket. Scrub the entire floor and all related woodwork (baseboards, stairs and newel posts, etc.) with a stiff brush, rinsing the brush frequently in the bucket. Do not pour the water onto the floor (there's no reason to add more water to the problem). Scrub thoroughly to remove all dirt, mud, silt, and organic material, all of which can promote mold growth.

How To Prevent Water Damage In Office

2/11/2021 (Permalink)

Monitor the bill
Sometimes, the surest way to detect leaks in the office is by looking at the bill. Often, the water bill ranges within a certain amount. However, you may realize that your water bill is excessively high. In such a case, this points to a leak from the office that is not visible. If you cannot accurately find out where the leak is, call a professional to check and confirm your suspicions. Just don’t leave such clues un-investigated. Water damage is disastrous, but it can be prevented. Besides teaching your office staff to be alert and on the lookout for any potential leaks, they need to take proactive measures to ensure that a water leak does not happen in the first place. As a pro-tip, be sure to hire an experienced and a reputable plumbing contractor should the need arise.

Understanding the Differences in Insurance Water Damage Coverages

2/11/2021 (Permalink)

If you're frustrated or confused by water damage coverages and insurance, you aren't alone. Below are explanations and definitions of the most often confused water damage terms and what you need to know about your coverage if you have to make a claim. You don't want to have your water damage claimed denied.

3 Types of Water Damage in Home Insurance

Some types of water damage are pretty straightforward. It's helpful to be familiar with three of them. When you call to make a claim and to find out if you're covered, the insurance company may use terms like:

  • Sewer backup or water backup
  • Overflow and discharge
  • Flood

The source of water damage is not always obvious. The insurance company might throw some of these terms around when you call to ask if you're covered in a water damage claim. Before deciding if it is covered or not, they will have to determine how the damage happened.

The insurance company will send an adjuster to manage your claim and they will investigate the source of the damage to see if it is covered.

What to do if your house floods

2/3/2021 (Permalink)

Document everything

When thinking about what to do if your house floods, the first thing that probably comes to mind is cleaning up the mess. But before you do, document everything so you can show your insurer the extent of the damage. Use your cellphone camera to film or photograph all aspects of the issue.

The water that’s flooding your home may include sewage or other hazardous material, so you need to take extreme precautions to not touch it. Before going into the home, suit up with appropriate protective gear, such as waders and waterproof boots.

Start the cleanup process

Cleaning up after a flood is a long, arduous process. You’ll need to remove the water, salvage any personal items you can, dry the space out, and disinfect any areas or objects the water touched. And, as in the previous step, you’ll need to undertake these tasks while wearing proper safety gear to avoid contact with bacteria.

Drying Out Your Home

2/2/2021 (Permalink)

Even if you are successful in removing all of the standing water from your home, everything will remain damp and wet, especially if heavy rains have increased the humidity in your area. If you have power, use your air conditioning and portable fans to help dry the wet areas of your home.

Dehumidifiers are also a big help, especially in closed off spaces such as basements or crawl spaces. Dehumidifiers work by removing excess moisture from the air. This is the easiest way to dry out your home and minimize the potential water damage you might be dealing with, as it does not require you to actively clean. However, in the case of a house flood, dehumidifiers are only supplemental and you are likely to need multiple methods of action. Dehumidifiers are recommended for anyone who lives in a damp climate or an area that experiences longer rainy seasons, as they can prevent some of the problems associated with this type of weather, both for you and your home.

Repairs

2/2/2021 (Permalink)

The aftermath of a house flood can typically take the longest amount of time. You may have broken windows from the water rushing in, flooring that may need to be replaced, and broken possessions in need of repair. After your insurance company pays out for qualified damages, you can hire a contractor if one is needed. Be sure to board up any broken windows and remove any harmful debris from flooded areas.

If you have electronics that were submerged in water or were damaged in the flood, make sure to have them checked out by a professional before plugging them back in to a power source. This includes your television sets, stereos, game consoles, computers, and appliances.

If you are unsure about what your first steps for home repairs should be when your house floods, then hiring a construction company that specializes in flood or natural disaster repairs can be helpful. They can determine if walls need replaced or if your floors have been compromised by the flood waters. A professional construction company can help you safely enjoy your home once again.

The Basics

2/2/2021 (Permalink)

The basics of what to do after a flood include the following:

  • Stop the water at its source.
  • Turn off the electricity (only if you can do so without stepping into water).
  • Evacuate the premises.

You’ll also need to contact your insurer (or your landlord, if you rent), document everything, and then clean up to prevent further damage from mold.

A flooded home can be the result of external events—such as extreme weather—or internal issues, including plumbing failures. No matter what the source of water is, there are steps you must take to protect your family, save your home, prevent health hazards, and recoup as much of the cost of repairs as possible from your insurer.

What to do if your house floods

What to do if your house floods

Pump out the water

The first step in the cleaning process: Eliminating any remaining standing water by pumping, mopping, and/or opening clogged drains.

When pumping out a flooded basement, do it in stages. You also want to wait until there’s no standing water left in the yard around your home. Pumping too early or too fast could cause structural damage to your home.

When you pump water out all at once, pressure from water-saturated soil on the outside of your home may cause your basement walls to collapse. The Red Cross recommends pumping about one-third of the water per day.

What to do after a water backup occurs in your home

3/4/2020 (Permalink)

What to do after a water backup occurs in your home

If you compare the frustrations of a flooded basement with those of a backed-up sewer, the sewer would probably win—by a nose!

Backups can occur for various reasons: pipe blockages, damaged sewer lines (especially in old homes), tree roots breaking into pipes…the list goes on.

Dealing with a backed-up sewer is not a pleasant task, given the stench and the matter that is potentially hazardous to your health. Sewage is comprised of both organic and inorganic matter, a mixture of water, human waste, mineral salts and garbage that can leak into the home when there is a problem with the underground plumbing designated to carry wastewater away.

Don't let clogged sewers wreak havoc on your home

Don't let clogged sewers wreak havoc on your home

Backed up sewers can cause thousands of dollars in damage to floors, electrical systems, walls, furniture and other belongings. Learn about causes of sewer backups, what you as a homeowner are responsible for maintaining and steps you can take to protect your home against sewer problems.

Homeowners’ responsibility for sewer maintenance

Most homeowners may not realize that they are responsible for the maintenance and repair of their house or sewer lateral—that is, the pipeline between the city sanitary sewer main (which is usually located in the street) and the building.

The sewer lateral is owned and maintained by the property owner and the homeowners responsibility includes any part of the lateral that extends into the street or public right of way. A cracked or deteriorated lateral or one filled with tree roots can allow groundwater to seep into the system, contributing to the problem.

For homeowners who want to insure themselves against sewer backups, coverage is available from most providers for a nominal cost.

How to prevent backups in your sewer

3/3/2020 (Permalink)

How to prevent backups in your sewer lateral and in the city main

  • Properly dispose of grease. Cooking oil should be poured into a heat-resistant container and disposed of properly after it cools off, not in the drain. Washing grease down the drain with hot water is unsatisfactory. As the grease cools off, it will solidify either in the drain, the property owner's line, or in the main sewer causing the line to constrict and eventually clog.
  • Properly dispose of paper products.Paper towels, disposable (and cloth) diapers, hygienic wipes and feminine products do not deteriorate quickly and can cause a great deal of trouble in the property owner's lateral as well as in the city main.
  • Periodically cut tree roots. If you have continuing problems with tree roots in your lateral, you may have to regularly have the roots cut by a professional.

A mold grows in… everything

3/3/2020 (Permalink)

A mold grows in…  everything

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mold is everywhere—it grows year-round and can be found both indoors and outdoors. Mold is a living organism and, as such, it grows and spreads when it has the right conditions—and it likes the damp.

Outdoor molds are commonly found in shady, damp areas and in soil. Indoors, mold can be found where humidity and moisture levels are high, such as in basements, kitchens, bathrooms and on ceilings and wall interiors where water from leaky pipes, roofs or windows can accumulate.

Indoor mold can be ruinous to surfaces (like walls and wallcoverings) and to your belongings.

Most mold is not covered by a standard homeowners policy

Mold, like rot and insect infestation, is a home maintenance issue and these are generally not covered by standard homeowners insurance policies. However, in the event that mold growth is the direct result of a covered peril such as a burst pipe, the cost of eliminating the mold may be covered. If you have federal flood insurance, it may cover you for mold and/or mildew damage—but only if it is directly attributable to a flood.

However, since it's unlikely you're covered for mold, it's even more important to keep your home mold-free—and in that effort, a strong offense is definitely your best defense.

Proper Blood Clean Up

3/2/2020 (Permalink)

Proper Blood Clean Up

Exposure to potentially hazardous blood is a very real concern for anyone working in a youth-focused or community-based organization. When a child gets a bloody nose or someone stubs their toe on the diving board you might be asked to clean it up. After all, we don’t want the general public to be exposed to bloodborne pathogens.

It is important to remember two things whenever you’re asked to clean up blood:

  1. Always assume the blood is infected with a dangerous disease like HIV, Hepatitis B or C.
  2. Have the right cleanup equipment and use it properly.

Bloodborne Pathogen Cleanup Supplies Checklist

Bodily fluid spills may require some specialized equipment depending on their location within the facility, the size of the spill and the type of spill, but most can be cleaned safely using the equipment recommended in OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogen Cleanup Kit.

  • Disposable gloves
  • Absorbent materials (e.g., kitty litter, sand, etc.)
  • Disinfecting towelettes
  • Biohazard bag with zip tie
  • Scoop
  • Protective cap
  • Eye protection
  • Protective gown
  • Mask

Blood Spills on Carpeted Floors

3/2/2020 (Permalink)

Blood Spills on Carpeted Floors

  • Steam Clean: Depending on the nature and size of the spill, it is advisable to perform a steam clean of the carpet. Steam cleaners will clean, remove debris, and sanitize carpeting more completely than conventional washing. Although there is some additional cost to steam cleaning, it is the best way to protect against bloodborne pathogens.
  • Change Carpet Tiles: Removable carpet tiles are a great way to protect against exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Carpet tiles are often less expensive than traditional carpet, and if a certain area becomes heavily soiled with blood they can easily be removed and replaced. If your organization is equipped with carpet tiles be sure to dispose of them properly after being saturated with blood or any other potentially infectious bodily fluid.

The Three Types of Flood Water

2/10/2020 (Permalink)

The Three Types of Flood Water

  • Clean Water: Natural water, such as rain or tap water, that poses no additional health risks.
  • Gray Water: Water that may contain additional chemicals, such as discharge from a washing machine.
  • Black Water: Sewage or groundwater from nearby sources that may pose extreme health risks.

Even if the water appears clean, it might contain chemicals or bacteria that could be hazardous to your health. Wear waders or rain boots, rubber gloves and any other available protective equipment to avoid unnecessary contact with your skin.

Contact Your Insurance Company

We recommend initiating your flood insurance claim as early as possible to minimize claim delays and to help get repairs completed sooner. This is especially important if your damage is the result of regional flooding, in which case hundreds of other homes could be affected, and your insurance company will quickly become inundated with claims.

What Does Flood Insurance Cover?

2/10/2020 (Permalink)

What Does Flood Insurance Cover?

Your standard homeowners insurance policy does not cover flood damage, unless flooding occurred due to a covered peril. Instead, most homeowners purchase flood insurance from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), though you may have purchased this through your homeowners insurer. The NFIP offers two different policies, one insuring your actual house and the other insuring your personal property.

The NFIP policy insuring your house covers:

  • Your physical home, including its floors, walls and foundation
  • Your home's built-in systems (electric, sewage, water heater, HVAC)
  • Your home's built-in appliances (fridge, oven)
  • Permanently installed carpet
  • Cabinets and permanent shelving
  • Detached garages
  • Water removal

The NFIP policy insuring your personal property covers:

  • Clothing
  • Electronics
  • Furniture
  • Movable appliances (washer and dryer, window A/C units, microwave)
  • Area rugs and other carpeting

Take Pictures

2/5/2020 (Permalink)

Take Pictures

Before you remove any water or make any repairs, fully document the damage for your insurer by taking photos or video. Digital versions are best, because they can be stored electronically and easily copied. If you start removing water or making repairs before you photograph the damage, you could potentially decrease the extent of your coverage. Call Your Insurance Company

Since you should notify your insurer soon as possible after the flood, it's a good idea to keep your insurance company and local agent's phone number in your always-ready emergency bag. Since groundwater flood damage typically isn't covered by conventional homeowners insurance policies, you'll need to work with your insurer to determine the cause of the flood and the extent of your coverage.

What to do if your house is flooded

2/5/2020 (Permalink)

What To Do if Your House Is Flooded

If your home is flooded, you need to take quick action to minimize the amount of damage to your property. Contact your flood insurance provider immediately to initiate the claims process and to schedule an adjuster to come to your home to assess the damage. Check for hazards, such as live electrical lines or structural damage, before you enter your home, and take photos or videos of all the damage before you remove any water. Keep in mind that flood damage that results from inclement weather isn't covered under a traditional homeowner's policy, so damage won’t be covered be unless you have an additional flood insurance policy.

Drying Out Your Home

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

Drying Out Your Home

Repairs

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

Repairs

What is biohazard remediation

2/3/2020 (Permalink)

What is biohazard remediation?

Biohazard remediation contractors are often referred to as crime scene cleaners, but the job entails much more than cleaning up after a death. Since the contractors are tasked with removing any type of biohazardous waste, they often get called to the scene of car wrecks, fights and accidents in the workplace. Additionally, biohazard cleaners will remove animal infestations, clean up animal feces and homes where hoarding has occurred.

A biohazard remediation contractor is not a coroner, and will not remove a body from the scene of a death. Instead, the contractor will come in after the coroner has removed the body and restore the scene to its original condition. The job revolves around containing the biological matter, preventing it from spreading and eliminating it completely.

Biohazardous Waste

2/3/2020 (Permalink)

Biohazardous Waste

Biohazardous waste, also called infectious waste is any waste containing infectious materials or potentially infectious substances such as blood. Biohazardous waste includes the following materials:

Pathological waste: All human tissues, organs, and body parts, including waste biopsy materials, tissues, and anatomical parts from surgery, procedures, or autopsy. Any unfixed human tissue, except skin.

Animal waste: All animal carcasses, body parts, and any bedding material from animals known to be infected with, or that have been inoculated with human pathogenic microorganisms infectious to humans.

There are different types of biohazardous materials

2/1/2020 (Permalink)

There are different types of biohazardous materials

Human Body Fluids.

All human body fluids in a liquid or in a semi-liquid sate, including any and all human blood and blood products, are a form of biohazard waste. Items that have been contaminated with blood, saliva, secretions, cerebral spinal fluid, amniotic fluid, peritoneal fluid, pericardial fluid, pleural fluid, and/or synovial fluid in any way, shape, or form, are biohazardous. These wastes represent the majority of hazardous waste.

Animal Waste

Any animal carcasses, body parts, or bedding material which an infected animal may have used, are also a form of biohazard waste. That is, unless the bedding material is inoculated with pathogenic microorganisms that aren’t infectious to humans. However, it’s most often times better to be safer than sorry in these cases, and treat the bedding material as such anyways.

Stay vigilant when it comes to mold

1/6/2020 (Permalink)

Stay vigilant. If you aren't aware of any toxic mold in your home, keep an occasional eye out for it. "A lot of keeping mold away comes down to maintenance," Schoenberg says. "Anywhere you may have dampness, there can be mold. So, look in dark and damp places. And it isn't always in obvious places. Like your washing machine, the tray where you put your soap, open that up and let that dry out."

  • Caulk around the water fixtures. That is, your kitchen and bathroom sink, or any sinks or showers in any rooms. "Leaks in and around showers, sinks and bathtubs are source of mold," he says.
  • Clean out the gutters. Well, at least you were going to get around to this sometime, anyway, right? Not only will you prevent things like flooding, it'll reduce your chance of mold. "Standing water in your gutters due to clogs can lead to water leaking into the eaves, and thus in exterior walls," Bodrozic says.
  • Caulk around your windows. On the outside, Bodrozic says. You don't want any leaking after a big rain.
  • Take care of any roof leaks. You'll notice if your roof is leaking into your bedroom, of course, but do you have an attic? Or a crawl space over your ceiling? "These leaks can go unnoticed for years, causing mold growth," he says.
  • Do you have a crawl space under the home? If you do, check under it, to make sure there's no water accumulating and standing there
